These are the stories, snapshots and musings from the streets of Kansas City, MO where I am producing the documentary series "KC SWAT" for A&E TV.
Kansas City is a city covering parts of Jackson, Clay, Cass, and Platte counties in Missouri, USA. Although it is the largest city in Jackson County, the suburb of Independence is the county seat. Situated at the junction of the Missouri and Kansas rivers, it lies along the boundary between Missouri and Kansas, and is directly opposite of Kansas City, Kansas.
Often abbreviated as "KC" (to refer to the entire metropolitan area), or "KCMO" (to refer to only Kansas City, Missouri), Kansas City, Missouri is the largest city in Missouri and the center of the 26th largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States. In the Midwest, Kansas City is the 7th largest city (between Cleveland, Ohio and Omaha, Nebraska). As of the 2000 census, the city has a population of 441,545. Combined with Kansas City, Kansas, the population is 588,411, but the entire metropolitan area (in both Missouri and Kansas) is approximately 1,836,038. (Census estimated 1,947,694 in 2005)
The restaurant gained fame over the next several decades, and notable diners included President Harry Truman. However, it became the subject of international attention when, in 1974, writer Calvin Trillin wrote in Playboy that Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City was "...possibly the best single restaurant in the world." Since then, it has been frequented by a number of famous visitors, including Steven Spielberg, Bryant Gumbel, Jimmy Carter, and Jack Nicholson, as well as a number of barbecue aficionados.
Arthur Bryant's is considered to have started the barbecue movement in Kansas City, by adapting other regional styles and inventing a particular style of sauce which is served with the smoked meats. The meat is smoked using hickory and oak.
Bryant's original location is kind of a no frills joint. Sr. Producer Erik Sulcs (pronounced: Shultz) and I had a craving for some BBQ today and had to stop by. We've taken some of the SWAT guys to lunch here. They love their BBQ!
